Abstract: In October 1984 a joint Indo-German Workshop on Marine Sciences was held at the National Institute of Oceanography, Goa, India to discuss the feasibility of carrying out joint research in marine sciences and to delineate areas where such cooperation can be implemented. Four areas of research were identified: (i) Quaternary Upwelling and Paleoclimate in the Arabian Sea related to Monsoonal Events, (ij) Geological and Geophysical Studies in the Arabian Sea, (iii) Geothermal Metallogenesis in the Indian Ocean, and (iv) Origin and Age of Polymetallic Nodules. Of these work has been taken up on projects (i) and (iii) which received priority recomnendation during the Goa Workshop. Within the framework of these projects 6 research cruises of German and Indian research vessels, R/V SONNE and ORV SAGAR KANYA, respectively, have been successfully carried out with participation of Indian and German scientists. In addition, a regular exchange of scientists from both countries takes place to supplement these field operations with laboratory studies on the s·amples recovered. In 1986 a joint Working Group on Marine Science Projects was formed to review the progress of the ongoing projects and to discuss research proposals in new are as of mutual i n terest. In July 1987 Dr. Desai, the director of the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) in Goa visited the Federal Republic of Germany. The possibility of holding a Working group Meeting was discussed at that time with Dr. F. Wilckens in the Minsitry for Research and Technology in Bonn, and it was suggested that the Meeting be held in the Federal Republic of Germany in 1988 and that it be combined with a joint Indo-German Workshop on Marine Sciences and Technology. This was taken up again during the visit in November 1987 of Dr. Ch. Manthey to the NIO, Goa. The proposal to hold the Workshop in Hamburg to coincide with the International Shipping and Marine Technology Market (SMM 1988) was accepted by the Indian side. The Workshop was organized jointly by the Geologisch-Paläontologisches Institut of the Hamburg University and the Internationales Büro of the KFA Jülich in close consultation with the Federal German Ministry for Research and Technology (BMFT, Bonn), the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR, New Delhi) and the NIO (Goa). It was held in Hamburg from September 26 to October 5, 1988 and included visits to Bremen, [...]
